Wesele / The Wedding
Wajda Film based on Wyspianski Play
Tickets: $10

This year marks the centennial of the death of Stanislaw Wyspianski, one of the most outstanding and multifaceted artist of his time in Europe. He successfully joined trends of modernism with themes of Polish folk tradition and Romantic history.
.
Wyspianski wrote a number of plays covering critical moments of Polish history. Wesele (The Wedding) is a deeply critical yet sarcastic expose of 19th-century Polish society. It transformed Wyspianski from a moderately successful visual and verbal artist associated with the "Young Poland" movement into a national dramatist-visionary whose significance in Poland is comparable to Yeats's in Ireland, O'Neill's in America, or Maeterlinck's in Belgium.

Wyspianski is considered the founder of the Polish modern drama; his plays, often allegorical, circle around historical events and the contemporary life of Poland, while his other plays are drawn from Greek mythology.

Director Andrzej Wajda (incidentally, an Honorary Trustee of the Kosciuszko Foundation) produced "Wesele " (The Wedding) in 1972. A fascinating essay by him and reviews can be found here. The film, considered one of his finest, is subtitled in English.

All events take place at the Foundation House, unless otherwise noted. Programs subject to change. Click here for directions.

Kosciuszko Foundation programs are supported by the Mary F. Koons Charitable Trust, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the Tadeusz Solowij Literary Fund, and the KF Cultural Fund.
