“Poland in the European Union, One Year After Joining"

Andrzej Harasimowicz, Kosciuszko Foundation / Semper Polonia Visiting Professor at Columbia University and Professor at the Warsaw University Centre for Europe, will give a talk on ““Poland in the European Union: One Year After Joining”” on Monday, November 14, at 6 PM at the Kosciuszko Foundation House (15 East 65th Street, Fifth / Madison). The lecture is open to the public, but reservations are required, and can be made by calling the Foundation Office at 212.734.2130.

The lecture is being presented by the Kosciuszko Foundation; the CUNY European Union Studies Center; and the East Central European Center of Columbia University. Professor Harasimowicz is Visiting Professor in the Department of International Relations of Columbia University, in a program aimed at the creation of a Chair of Polish Studies at the University.

In Fall 2003, the Kosciuszko Foundation entered into an agreement with the Polish Senate, represented by the Semper Polonia Foundation, whereby each party agreed to contribute up to $ 50,000 annually for a period of five years in support of a Visiting Professor. Professor Harasimowicz was selected by Columbia University to teach courses in the current academic year, dealing with Poland's entry into the European Union.

For eleven years, Professor Harasimowicz served in the Polish Government’s central administration. He was Director General in the Council of Ministers’’‘‘ Office, 1991-92; and Director of the European Integration Bureau, 1991-96, responsible for the government’s programming and implementing activities within the area of European Integration. In 1997-98 he was Director of the European Institutions and Policy Planning Department, in the Office of the Committee for European Integration, and spokesman for the Committee, 2000-01. He also directed the Committee’s European Information Department, 2001-02. In 2002 he was Senior Counselor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of Strategy and Foreign Policy Planning.

Since 2003, he has been a Professor in the Warsaw University Centre for Europe. He has also been a research fellow at Oxford and Yale Universities; Professor Harasimowicz’s latest book, ““Poland’s Way to the European Union, 1989-2004" is in pre-publication.
