Sembrich Voice Competition

The Sembrich Voice Competition of the Kosciuszko Foundation will take place on Saturday, March 13, beginning at 10 a.m.  Auditions take place at Hunter College's Lang Recital Hall; they are open to the public, and no ticket is required. (Hunter College is at 69th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues). For additional information, call the Foundation at (212) 734-2130.

The Competition honors the great Polish soprano Marcella Kochanska Sembrich, who made her Metropolitan Opera debut in its brand-new building in 1883. After an enormously successful career, the popular singer founded the vocal programs at both the Juilliard School and Curtis Institute.  Previous winners of the competition include Barbara Hendricks and Jon Opalach.  The winner of the Sembrich Competition in New York is invited to the Moniuszko International Competition in Warsaw later in the year.
Jurors this year include Alfred Hubay, whose career at the Metropolitan Opera spanned 58 years in top management positions, and who serves on numerous boards and competitions; Robert White, whose musical career includes appearances worldwide and teaching at the Juilliard; and Elisabeth Carron, who enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the New York City Opera, among others, and at the Manhattan School of Music
