Tom Pniewski -- (212) 734-2130 ext. 214

June 17 at 7 PM
Boguslaw Winid, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Polish Embassy in Washington, will give an illustrated talk on "Stolen Polish Art," the sad legacy of looting and pillaging of the nation's treasures during war and occupation.

Poland lost many thousands of artworks during World War Two and in the years following. Paintings, sculpture, art of all genres and periods, from ancient to modern, were stolen by the Nazis who occupied the country and later by the Soviet regime. The identification of these works, and efforts to have them returned, has occupied teams of scholars, lawyers and politicians for more than half a century.

Boguslaw Winid, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Polish Embassy in Wahington, will give an illustrated talk on "Stolen Polish Art" on Thursday, June 17, at 7 PM at the Kosciuszko Foundation (15 East 65th Street, between Fifth and Madison). Beginning with the tragic looting by the Germans and Soviet s during the war, he will go on to discuss early restitution from territory occupied by the Americans and finally efforts to recover artworks since Poland regained its sovereignty in 1989. His talk, including a PowerPoint presentation, is open to the public and no ticket is needed, but reservations are required and can be made by calling the Foundation Office at (212) 734 - 2130.

Additional information about the stolen art is available at the Embassy's Website.

All events take place at the Foundation House, unless otherwise noted. Programs subject to change. Click here for directions.

Kosciuszko Foundation programs are supported by the Mary F. Koons Charitable Trust, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the Tadeusz Solowij Literary Fund, and the KF Cultural Fund.
