For Children 6-12 Years
Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 3:00 PM
Tickets are $15 ($10 for KF members). For additional information, call 212-734-2130.
On Saturday, December 1 at 3:00 PM, there will be a Traditional Polish Christmas celebration for children ages 6-12 at the Kosciuszko Foundation’s elegant townhouse at 15 East 65th Street in New York City. Artist and educator Dorothy Wieczerzak will lead a hands-on Christmas Tree Ornament Workshop, followed by a tree-decorating ceremony, visit by St. Nicholas (Sw. Mikolaj), caroling sing-along and traditional holiday refreshments. Each child will make an ornament for the Foundations’s Christmas tree, and one to take home. Attendance is limited.
This event, presented by the Kosciuszko Foundation in conjunction with the Polish American Teachers Association, is part of a special series of workshops and performances for children, celebrating Polish culture, history and traditions. The first presentation, in October, was the play “The Seeds of Freedom”, which told the story of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, who left his native Poland in 1776 to aid the cause of the American Revolution.
On March 15, 2008, children will be invited to dress in Polish costume and take part in a special Polish Folklore, Fables and Storytelling Competition, reciting traditional or original Polish stories (in English or Polish). Judged by a jury consisting of educators, winners will receive cash and/or other prizes.
On April 12 there will be Traditional Polish Folk Dancing! The young participants can put on their dancing shoes and ornate Polish folk costumes, and follow members of the Polish American Folk Dance Company in the Polonaise, Krakowiak and Polka. This fun-filled workshop will teach the basics of traditional Polish dances.
This series of children’s programs is made possible in part through the generosity and support of the Personal Advisors of Ameriprise Financial and the Association of the Sons of Poland.
Founded in 1925, the Kosciusko Foundation is dedicated to promoting educational and cultural exchanges and relations between the United States and Poland, and to increasing American understanding of Polish culture and history. It is a national not-for-profit, nonpartisan and non-sectarian organization.
