Summer Studies Abroad - Information for all Applicants

Students who enroll in summer programs through the Kosciuszko Foundation are offered:

  • A special discount price of $101.25 on the purchase of the new Kosciuszko Foundation Dictionary, a two-volume set with CD-ROM.
  • two, three, four, five and six week sessions to choose from
  • Polish language courses at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels
  • choice of language intensity (intensity refers to the number of class hours per day)
  • lectures on history and culture in English; (some lectures offered in Polish)
  • the opportunity to earn undergraduate credit
  • blocked seats on group flights to Poland and Rome
  • information to assist students before departure
  • a list of other participants in the program (provided in May)
  • an American bilingual Group Leader in Krakow

Each program includes:

  • cultural events and sightseeing trips
  • a language placement test (except in Rome)
  • shared dormitory room
  • 3 meals a day
  • assistance from Polish university students (except in Rome)

Admission and Eligibility

Minimum eligibility requirement: high school graduates who will be 18 years of age by the first day of the program. College students, graduates and adults who have an interest in Polish language and culture may also apply. There are no exceptions to the minimum age requirement.

Previous instruction in Polish is not required for most language programs.

Submit two applications for each session you are applying to, 2 passport size photos signed on the reverse side, a $50 non-refundable registration fee and a $300 deposit (for each session), before the deadline date. Applicants who wish to reserve a single room must pay for the single room at the time of application. Applicants of the Rome program who wish to spend extra nights at the dormitory must complete the Extra Nights Lodging Reservation Form.

The deadline date for all Applications, Physician's Certificates, Credit Approval Forms, and Extra Nights Lodging Reservation Forms is May 1. Please mail all forms prior to May 1st. See the Application Form for further instructions. Send applications and payments made out to:

Applicants will receive a notification of receipt of application along with information on the program and a bill for balance of payment. KF will register each applicant when full payment is received. Balance of payments are due by May 15, 2004

Late Applications
Late applications will be accepted providing there is space in the program. Please call for information on space availability. Should space be available, the student must be prepared to submit registration fees, full payment, other additional fees and all required forms. There are NO exceptions to this requirement.

Undergraduate Credit
Each course description includes the number of class hours, starting and ending dates of the course, and credits available. Students who wish to receive undergraduate credit must have courses pre-approved by their home institutions prior to attending summer programs abroad. A Credit Approval Form is provided with the application form.

Credit seeking students may call the Kosciuszko Foundation Summer Study Abroad Office for a copy of last year's syllabus. Present the syllabus, 2004 General Information and Program Description, and University Credit Approval Form to your academic advisor. Return the signed Credit Approval Form to the Kosciuszko Foundation before May 1.

Credit seeking students must meet course requirements, pass final exams and submit all required reports in order to receive a Transcript of Credit. Host institutions send Transcripts of Credit on or about September 15. Each transcript includes the course name, number of hours per course and grade received by the student (A, B, C, etc.) In the Polish educational system, one academic hour is equivalent to 45 minutes.

State Certificates in Polish as a Foreign Language:
The Polish Ministry of Education and Sports is planning to launch a system of state certification exams in Polish as a Foreign Language. If all aspects of the program are in place by the start of the summer program, exams may be offered this summer. The cost will be approx. $100-$120. Details will be provided at the beginning of the program.

Group Flights
Group Flights are arranged and handled by PAT Tours. Students may call 1 (800) 388-0988 for ticket prices, reservations and information.

Cancelations and Refunds
Cancellations with a full refund will be made up to May 15. A $75 cancellation fee will be applied after May 15. No refunds are made after the first day of the program.

Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available on a competitive basis for programs at the Jagiellonian University. Scholarships cover Program fees (Program fees usually include Tuition, a Shared Room, Meals and Sightseeing) and may cover a portion of travel expenses. Scholarships do not cover registration fees, single room or expenses for extra nights lodging.

Scholarship Eligibility: Applicants must US citizens or permanent residents of the US, and high school graduates who are at least 18 years old by the first day of the program, college or graduate students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0. A deposit is not required if you are applying for a scholarship.

Materials which must be submitted for scholarship consideration: A Summer Study Abroad application form submitted in duplicate with 2 signed passport size photos, official transcripts showing your cumulative GPA, 2 letters of recommendation from professors, an 2 page (min.) essay on why you wish to attend the program, a completed Financial Information Form (download forms above) and a $50 registration fee.

Scholarship Mailing Instructions: Submit your application, the $50 registration fee and all supporting documents to the Kosciuszko Foundation chapter nearest the high school, college, or university you attend. KF Chapter addresses are included in the application packet. If there is no KF Chapter in your area send the application and all supporting materials to the Kosciuszko Foundation Summer Study Abroad Office in New York City. A deposit is not required from scholarship applicants.

Deadline Date for Summer Study Abroad Scholarship Application and Supporting Materials: March 15.

Scholarship Notification will be made in writing. Approximate date of notification: May 15.
