Summer Studies Abroad

The Polish Institute of Christian Culture, Rome

Program dates:

General Topic: Poland 1945-1989 History and Culture
John Paul II: His Life, Work, Teaching and the Way to Sanctity

Course offerings:

History of Poland -15 hours 1 credit

Polish Literature -15 hours

1 credit

Polish Art -15 hours 1 credit
Polish State & Society -15 hours 1 credit
Polish Theater and Film -15 hours 1 credit

The above lectures will include the old and recent history of Poland; the social and moral teachings of John Paul II; Polish literature; social and economic issues in present-day Poland: Polish art; Polish film and theater; Polish art and literature abroad; the Church and its role in Polish communities abroad; Polish emigrant's contribution in the world's culture.

Lectures are offered in Polish and English. Each course includes a final exam.

Sightseeing:
A general audience with the Holy Father. Sightseeing of Rome, the Vatican Museum, Assisi, Orvieto, Monte Cassino and Pompeii.

Housing:
Polish Home, at via Cassia 1200 on the outskirts of Rome. Bathroom facilities are communal. Single rooms are available to senior citizens on a first-come-first-serve basis. See maporama.com for distance from Vatican City.

To apply for Credit:
Print the Rome 2006 Syllabus (17 pages - 676K pdf format), a copy of this page, a Credit Approval Form (found with application materials) and submit to your academic advisor for approval. Send the completed Approval Form to the KF by May 25th.

Transcripts of Credit are issued by the Catholic University of Lublin. Students applying for credit must attend classes and pass final exams.
1 academic hour = 45 minutes.

Program fee:
$1,400; $1,250 with a valid student ID card. Includes lectures, a shared room, meals and sightseeing. Program fee does not include airfare and museum fees.

Options:
Early arrival is Friday, June 8; late return is Monday, July 2.

Breakfast & dinner-$20
Lunch-$15

Single rooms are available to senior citizens.*
Single room (no bathroom) - no additional cost.
Single with a bathroom - 30 Euro/night.
Double with a bathroom - 25 Euro/night per person.
Triple or larger with a bathroom - 20 Euro/night per person.

Rome airport pick-up services are available.*
One-way for individual airport pickup is $25 ; $15 for two or more persons.

* Reservations are required. Single rooms, early arrivals and late returns are subject to confirmation. All reservation forms may be found with application materials. Payments for extra nights/meals, single rooms and airport pick-ups are made in Rome.

Important information appears on the Summer Study Abroad General Information page. Please read it before applying to this program. On the application form, indicate "Session R" in column 2. Each course is offered in Polish and English - list your preference in column 3. Indicate your course choices in columns 4 and 5. If you would like to share a room with a friend who is applying, list the name of the person in column 6. Senior citizens may indicate "yes" for a Single room in column 6. Include a copy of your student ID card in order to take advantage of the student discount. All applicants are required to submit a Physician's Certificate. See application form for instructions regarding payment.
