Fellowship and Grants
for Polish Citizens
Program for Advanced Study/Research
or Teaching in the United States.
The Kosciuszko Foundation annually awards a number of Fellowships/Grants
to Poles for advanced study/research or teaching at universities
and other institutions of higher learning in the United States.
The Foundation provides a cost-of-living stipend which includes:
transatlantic travel, housing allowance, health and accident insurance
coverage, and, when warranted, domestic travel. There is no allowance
for dependents (spouse or child) support. Awardees are solely responsible
for all expenses of accompanying dependents.
Award Categories:
Teaching Fellowshipsare
for university faculty members with teaching assignments at the
United States universities in addition to individual research project.
Fellowshipsare
awarded to postgraduate scholars, professionals or artists with
doctoral degrees.
Grantsare awarded
to those without doctoral degrees.
Awards range from $7,650 to $30,500 depending on the duration
and award category.
In determining awards, in addition to overall excellence, consideration
is given to number of other factors such as scholarly affiliation
or geographic location in order to achieve fair and reasonable
diversity among awardees.
There are no restrictions as to fields of study/research
ELIGIBILITY:
Only Polish citizens residing permanently in Poland. This program
is NOT for Poles residing outside of Poland, nor those residing
temporarily outside of Poland, whether or not engaged in research/study.
Dual citizens (United States and Poland) as well as individuals
applying or holding United States permanent residency status (green
card ) are not eligible. There are no exception to this
requirement.
Applicants must hold an M.A. or M.S. degree prior to the commencement
date of the award. Preference is given to doctoral or postdoctoral
candidates and scholars. Current academic affiliation is
required in all cases and must be documented with a certificate
from the place of academic employment.
Applicants must have strong English language proficiency to communicate
and to carry out proposed projects. The level of English proficiency
will be determined during the personal interviews in Warsaw.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A thorough and well-defined typewritten proposal (not less than
2 pages in length) for conducting studies/research in the United
States with specific study/research plans.
A current invitation form a United States educational institution
where applicant plans to conduct his/her research/studies. Applicants
must secure their own placement or affiliations. The Foundation
does not assist in establishing contacts.
A detailed curriculum vitae, including a list of important and
recent publications of which the applicant is the principal author.
Three letters of reference (at least one must be from
the outside of your academic affiliation).
Literary writers, journalists, and critics must support their
research proposal with significant samples of their work. Visual
artists are required to submit (together with their applications)
catalogs, photographs or slides of their work. All materials
submitted are nonreturnable.
Note: As a condition to the actual receipt of an award,
all successful candidates must submit a completed Physician's
Certificate form which will be supplied by the Foundation along
with the award notification during the month of May.
All research proposals are reviewed by the Kosciuszko
Foundation Academic Advisory Committee. Based on the Committee's
recommendations, selected candidates are invited for personal interviews
in March at the Foundation's Warsaw Office before a joint American
and Polish Academic Commission. Award announcement are made at
the end of May.
Please Note
Since the Foundation grants do not provide for tuition costs,
those applicants who are accepted by universities for Ph.D. programs
should apply for a Kosciuszko Foundation grant only in cases where
their tuition has been waived totally or substantially.
All Fellowships/ Grants are for the academic year following submission
of the application. They range from 3-10 months as determined by
the Foundation. The Kosciuszko Foundation has a right to revoke
any grant/fellowship in the event the grantee is found to have
violated laws of the United States, failed to maintain high academic
or professional standards and in cases of mental incapacitation.
Fellowships/Grants recipients may reapply after a period of five
years.
Applications of unsuccessful candidates are valid
for 2 years only. In order to reapply, applicants must submit:
a letter requesting consideration; a letter confirming the applicant's
continued institutional academic affiliation in Poland and an updated
invitation from a United States academic institution.

Applications must be completed in all respects and submitted
in duplicate, one copy to the New York office and one copy to the
Warsaw office, by the deadline date.
